So I made it here to Bard College at Simon’s Rock. So far, so fantastic. There are some pretty interesting people who also call this place home. My mom, step-dad, and I rode tripped our way here earlier in the week. We took a Ferry over lake Michigan and went through Canada to see the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. It was a pretty bittersweet endeavor, but I think we all enjoyed it.
At Simon’s Rock, the first week for freshmen is pretty much a reading and writing bootcamp. About five hours a day are spent in the classroom with a professor and fourteen or so classmates, writing about anything ranging from our numerous reading materials to a group of randomly assorted objects in the center of the table. Most written prose has to be read aloud to the group, but no judgement is allowed to be made; the only appropriate response to a reading is “thank you.”
The Reading and Writing Workshop (this is what the boot camp is officially called) closes with two groups joining together and sharing their best edited work. Unfortunately, I became sick during my second day on campus and was sniffling my way through the workshop. Fortunately, though, this proved to be great inspiration for my final piece, which I have included below...
